Ride with the VeloClub 167

VeloClub 167 is a modern cycling club based primarily in the Northeast of England. We have a varied membership of more than 180 men and women of all ages and abilities, spread over a broad geographical area; including Northumbria, County Durham, Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Formed in 1993 by a small group of long distance cycling enthusiasts who wanted weekend rides to be at least 100 miles, our club has grown steadily since. The first few members of VC167 banded together to ride hard and cover long distances in fast times: by supporting each other and riding in a group at events. Over time we have grown to be more inclusive – with cyclists of all abilities riding in groups or solo at a range of events more diverse than just Audaxes . We are proud to wear the VC167 jersey and have a shared passion for cycling, even when members move away from the Northeast of England, many will retain their membership and wear their club jersey whenever they can. In 2018 the club celebrated its 25th Anniversary, during that year we organised:

  • 18 Audax events all over the Northeast of England
  • Regular Coast 2 Coast “in-a-day” social rides
  • Weekly evening rides near Newton Aycliffe – 20 to 65 miles at a variety of efforts
  • Cyclo-cross
  • Circuit racing
  • Rides every weekend from short social pootles to longer adventures
  • Off-road ‘Trail rides’ / ‘Rough Stuff’
  • Touring
  • Overseas training rides
  • Social events including “Overnight Winter Camping” at Tan Hill Inn, a 25th Anniversary Party, AGM and Christmas Party.
  • Pub rides to York, Darlington and Durham.
  • Seaside ‘fish+chips’ rides

VeloClub 167 members also support the national and international organisations of long distance cycling, with members who have been, or continue to serve as, the Chairperson and/or Committee members of Audax UK (the long distance cycling association of the United Kingdom). Additionally one member of VC167 has been the long standing President of Les Randonneurs Mondiaux – the worldwide organisation supporting long distance cycling of events greater than 1200km.

Most of our social riding is based around the Newton Aycliffe area of County Durham, simply because our largest membership and most energetic ride organisers live there. However, don’t be surprised if you see a lone cyclist in the middle of nowhere wearing the iconic yellow and blue club jersey – they may be 200km into a 400km ride, having starting before dawn and will be riding through the night…

If you’ve ever wondered where the name ‘VC167’ comes from, the clue is in the new name for parts of the original ‘Great North Road’… the A167 which runs from Topcliffe in Yorkshire to the Angel of the North in Gateshead. It can also make a useful ‘Winter 200’ as the road is gritted and the return distance is about 200km.
