Among the many benefits to VC167 of affiliation with Cycling UK, should we consider the need to campaign on an issue, we have the backing and expertise of Cycling UK to help. Recently Highways England proposed to ban cycling on the A63 dual carriageway near Hull on the spurious reason that “cyclists cannot keep up with traffic and are therefore a danger to themselves and other road users”. The real reason was a request by Humberside Police to ban Time Trials. A local VC167 member worked with Cycling UK’s Duncan Dollimore to protest against this ban on the premise that it opened a door for Highways England to ban cycling from almost any road they have responsibility for. The section of A63 is ridiculously busy at many times of the day, but at night – as experienced by our LEL riders in 2017 – the A63 provided a very quick route away from the Humber Bridge.
